When done correctly, the juxtaposition of old and new can work incredibly well, as it does in this kitchen renovation. This contemporary kitchen is not part of a modern new home, rather it is the new kitchen in a refurbished classic Mt Eden villa. Like many villa owners, our clients were after something altogether modern, secure in the knowledge that it would look great if done right.

Our solution was to take advantage of the 3.6 metre stud height (yes, really) to create walls of cupboards that soared floor to ceiling without interruption. Not only does this create a massive amount of useful storage and pantry space, but the monolithic structures give a superbly minimalist look that works beautifully with the ornate detail of villas.

There is also a nice symmetry in this layout - two walls that reflect one another connected by a corner shelving unit. The left-hand unit contains a generous pantry and the other houses the appliances and cupboards.

The look is completed with a sleek kitchen island that houses an underbench-mounted sink and power tower that pops-up at a touch to provide power outlets when required. Finished all-in-white, the kitchen looks great against the richness of the floor and adds considerable reflected light into the space.
